NEW!! In 2008, Presbyterian Healthcare Services and University of New Mexico Health Services Center each announced their plans to erect hospitals in Rio Rancho. With both healthcare providers projecting 2010 opening dates at different sites, construction times will be neck and neck as providers vie for the title of being Rio Rancho’s first full-service hospital.

In a media briefing on May 5, Presbyterian Healthcare Services announced it would construct a $200 million, 120 bed hospital on 66 acres on the northeast corners of Unser and Westside Boulevards. Upon completion of phase one, the Presbyterian hospital will encompass 340,000 square feet and a four story medical office building will encompass 133,000 square feet.

Touted as New Mexico’s first 21st century hospital, the Rio Rancho facility will include: a full-service emergency department complete with a helicopter pad; a state-of-the-art women’s center, labor and delivery and NICU; intensive care; operating rooms; and a catheterization lab. The Presbyterian hospital is expected to create more than 600 jobs.

The University of New Mexico Sandoval Regional Medical Center (UNM SRMC) also announced in May that it will build a hospital on the Rio Rancho university campus set to open in 2010.

The 280,000 square foot UNM mmedical center will be for-profit and will open with 75 private rooms with the capacity to expand to 150. Full build-out will consist of 300+ beds. The medical center is expected to and bring about $158 million into the local economy every year through service-related spending.

UNM SRMC will consist of level 3 or 4 trauma center, urgent care, general medical services/surgical services, OB-GYN, advanced imaging, nuclear medicine, stress testing, EKG, EEG, EMG, and Cardiac Cath. The medical center expects to create 1,632 direct and indirect jobs over the next ten years, with additional gross receipts of $1.5 billion in the same time period. Officials estimate the hospital will further boost the local economy by paying about $800,000 per year in property and local taxes.
