Police/Fire Protection

The City of Rio Rancho Public Safety Department is a full-service public safety agency that provides law enforcement, fire suppression, emergency medical services, code enforcement and animal control services to the citizens of Rio Rancho. The Fire/EMS Services Division has two major work components: fire fighting and emergency medical response. The Law Enforcement Services Division handles all law enforcement requests in the areas of field training, field investigators, K-9 unit, traffic unit, special weapons and tactics, and gang enforcement team.

The City’s Public Safety Department employs 315 people, including 121 police officers and 99 firefighters/EMTs as of February 2008. The main police/fire station is located at 500 Quantum Road in Rio Rancho and the Department has five substations throughout the City.

 

Crime Statistics

 The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) publishes uniform crime statistics annually in Crime in the United States. The latest publication contains 2006 data and focuses on cities with populations exceeding 100,000. The following table compares Rio Rancho to selected cities. Violent crimes are defined as murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Fire Rating

 The City of Rio Rancho receives its community fire rating through the Insurance Services Office (ISO). ISO is a risk advisory organization that evaluates municipal fire-protection efforts in communities throughout the United States. The City of Rio Rancho’s current fire rating, based on ISO’s Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS), is a Class 4, scoring between 60-69 points. The FSRS assigns points for each item and calculates a total score from 0 to 100. The Class 4 refers to the commercial rating and ISO ratings and insurance rates are subject to change.
