The City provides water and waste water services to all of Rio Rancho, except the recently annexed Quail Ranch Development that is being served by New Mexico Utilities. Groundwater is Rio Rancho’s sole water source. The City has water rights permits that meet current and near-term demand. The City’s long-term water plans include future acquisition for 24,000 acre-feet of water rights, future acquisition for wells, water storage and pumping; and acquisition for water treatment of arsenic. The City water and waste water system is comprised of six waste water treatment plants and nineteen separate water wells.
